Self-Reflection
He couldn't ignore his subconscious. In the most literal sense, it was hanging around him now, battering him with constant, unrelenting and somewhat infuriating questions and comments. He had sat at his desk, holding a hammer in one hand, a cell phone in the other. He'd wired the phone into an outlet from within the bathroom wall, keeping it on the charger and in a small steel box within the insulation to protect against heat and fire damage. His hands were covered in sheet rock dust from tearing the wall apart, something he hoped the landlord would overlook once he repaired the wall and repainted it again. He sighed, staring at the display and the missed calls.
"Ok, great first step. Now, the next thing is... you open the phoneeeeee... and you caaaaaaaaaaaall." The copycat figure in his head had been standing over his shoulder. He'd ignored him and left the issue alone again, this time turning the phone off totally.
And for that, he'd been driven to the brink of insanity. For days he was annoyed by that damned figure, as much as he tried to ignore it. He'd thought on the idea, which only drew the figure to continue to question his train of thought, each and every time. "Okay. So you think ignoring them is fine. Why? Sure, you don't kill anyone. Or kidnap. Or whatever. Sure, you stay off the grid. Sure, you're happy being nobody and nothing and secretly rich so you never leave here or do anything anymore. Oh wait, no you're not. Gojinn sat up from the couch and clicked the TV off with his remote now, tossing it to the coffee table. He looked at himself, sitting beside him on the couch. "Alright, fine. I know I can't disappear without actually phasing out and never coming back. Or at least not coming back for a while - but OH WAIT - time passes slower. So waiting what, a year, means ten or so in that hell? No, thank you. And they're not gonna do anything. They never have. I got away from it, told them to find someone else. Seems like they did for a while there."
"Looks like that didn't work out. Because if I remember correctly, and being that I'm in your head - I DO..." The twin figure leaned in and yelled. "You had over fifty missed calls from THEM!!!! So just call them, tell them no. See if they come out to play. If they do, you're screwed. Take it and apologize." Gojinn leaned back now, knowing he really did only have one option. Sure, he could fight and fight and fight, but it would never end. One time he'd get caught off guard. He wouldn't die, but they'd keep him for as long as they could. And knowing they weren't exactly friendly... well...
He reached for the phone on the table and flipped it open, holding the power button down. "This is not going to end well." The figure stood and walked across the room. It turned and faced him with a smirk. "It's never going to end. Ever. But if they're calling you this many times, maybe it's not even for them. Maybe they're subbing out to you." The thought had obviously occurred to him in the back of his head, but he hadn't thought too hard on it until now. The company almost never did any work outside of their private channels. However, some more of the more "special" cases were contracted to the best of the best, or to those who didn't work directly for them. Sometimes it was best not to be involved in their case. They simply handed off the contract for a finders fee. Or...
"Maybe they're setting me up."
