Charon’s Diary

Excerpts recovered by Augustus from Death Inc Mainframe computer.

Some of the diary is truly unrecoverable but the stuff I did recover I’ve written down here.

“…..I think I might have died many years ago if it hadn’t been for the ‘monster under my bed’. He came and helped me when I needed it. They tried many times to convince me he wasn’t real, that it was simply an imaginary friend but I know differently. I know who he is. We met in secret for the first time when I was about 10 years old, it had taken them a few years to track down my new family but they decided it was best to try and help me with my ‘problems’. I can’t control my temper and they said they would try and help to tame it before I did something really bad.”

The next entry is many years later, I wasn’t able to recover anything in between.

“When I think back now, I realise that if it hadn’t been for them I would probably be in prison, a loony bin or perhaps worse. My second family are to blame for the personality problems, damned Christian fearing idiots. The demon is a part of me, its not something that can be separated but now it is. We had to do it, it was the only way that they could co-exist.”

“I have spent several days practising how to control the separate parts of my personality, the demon part seems to have subsided and my third family seem to be much more ‘normal’ They never ask me where I’ve been or who I was with, they just seem happy that I’m not screaming and smashing things up.”

“They helped me find my ‘real’ family a few days ago but I don’t know what’s happening to me, I keep losing control of the demon part of my personality and doing stupid things. I got arrested again and this time my adoptive parents threw me out and so I decided to make the trip to America. I hope that my ‘real’ family can help me more with the problems I’m experiencing.”

Another gap.

“I have blamed Darkspade for many years, I was told it was his fault that I was created in the first place. I have never felt so lonely and unwanted in a place but they said to stick with it and they would help me where they could. I talked to them about Darkspade and he laughed and explained that Darkspade was like me. I got angry and started to feel the demon rising up and started smashing the place up.”

“It was days before I calmed down enough for them to speak to me about Darkspade again but when they did they explained that he was also unwanted by the family but he was rescued and taken under the wing of a different person and had begun to follow the wrong path. One day he would find the right path again and that I should try and help him look in the right places. I think they’re weird.”

“The Death Family have accepted me but I have had to work hard to gain that acceptance, it doesn’t bother me too much, I don’t really like any of them but its important to keep in with them, I need the money and the training and my ‘real’ father has taken a shine to me. He takes me everywhere with him and shows me all kinds of different magicks and technology but even I can see that they are headed for a fall. If they continue to treat the family around them like they do they won’t have a family before long.”

“Darkspade is not a topic to be spoken about within the walls of the mansion but I have begun my own project while the house is empty. I have started to ‘borrow’ computer parts and from an old drawing I found at the back of a shelf in the library I discovered a basement which was originally part of an escape tunnel.”
