Handcuffs

After cutting her phone line, Shizuka waited for a while outside of Adler's house on the night he decided to eliminate her. She unexpectedly brought a guy home with her from a bar she sometimes went to after work. They had more drinks at her place before fucking in her bedroom on the second floor. She cuffed him to the bed halfway into it. Shizuka wondered if she was going to get kinkier than that, but she never did.

He sat on a small hill behind her house the entire time, the free show doing nothing for him. He was there for blood, not sex. He wondered if the guy was going to end up staying the night. However, soon after he and Adler were finished, he got dressed and left. Shizuka wouldn't have objected to killing the guy too if he hadn't left. It was just a lot less complicated when he didn't have to kill people he hadn't planned to kill, people not listed on a contract.

When Adler disappeared into her bathroom, Shizuka casually made his way down the hill and climbed over the wooden fence, landing on a brick patio. He made his way around the edge of the pool, careful to not bump into any of the chairs or the table. At the back of the house, he peered in through the sliding glass door. The lights were out in the room beyond. She probably wouldn't be back downstairs for the night.

A quick check told him that there was an alarm for the house. He would have been surprised if there wasn't one. Without an easy way to know if it was armed or not from outside of the house, it severely limited his options for getting inside. Cutting the power to the house would be no good either since most alarm systems had a backup battery. Stepping away from the house, he quickly scanned it for any open windows. There was just one, above the roof of the garage. It would have to do. He just had to find a way actually up there.

There was no ladder laying out in the open. Going back to the patio table, he wondered how he could get it closer to the wall to give himself a boost. Dragging it across the patio would be too noisy and she'd have to be deaf to not hear it. Carefully, he managed to instead roll it into the grass before dragging it. There was still some noise, but the grass helped muffle it. When it was against the wall, he climbed on top of the table and managed to grab the edge of the roof, hauling himself up.

Shizuka crept towards the window, keeping his head down as much as he could and peeking in to see just where the window would lead to. On the inside was a hallway which seemed to connected Adler's bedroom and bathroom to the rest of the house. Climbing in through the window, he could hear the shower. Remaining cautious, he slowly moved down the hallway and almost as soon as he stepped into her bedroom, the shower stopped. Freezing, he listened closely, hearing her open the shower door, probably to grab a towel.

After a moment, he moved even slower towards the bathroom until he was standing in the doorway. She happened to have her back to the doorway as she slid on her robe, startled by his presence when she turned back around.

"Who the fuck are you? What do you want?" Adler tied the belt on her robe, seeming more angry at his presence than scared.

"If you think about it hard enough, you'll understand why I'm here." Shizuka drew a silenced pistol identical to the one he used to kill Walsh.

Before he could fire, she grabbed her hair dryer and threw it at him, striking his chin. He was caught off guard and stumbled back. This gave her the opportunity to run past him and into the hallway outside her bedroom. He hadn't expected a reaction like that from her. She wouldn't be able to outsmart him for much longer though. He wouldn't allow it.

Ignoring the throbbing pain on the front of his chin, he ran after her, able to hear her footsteps on the first floor. He rushed down the stairs, not wanting to give her a chance to escape the house. At the bottom of the stairs, he saw that she was at the phone, trying to get a dial tone. Giving up, she slammed the phone back down and ran into the living room.

Gun still drawn, Shizuka almost casually followed Adler. She was searching for something, he suspected her cellphone. He didn't know where it was, but it didn't seem to be in the living room. When she turned around to see him again, she let out a shout of surprise. She whipped a pair of handcuffs at him that were sitting on a cushion of her sofa before lunging for her fireplace, her hand outstretched for a broadsword hanging above the mantle.

Dodging the handcuffs, it took only two quick shots from the pistol to her legs to drop her to the floor, her hand missing the handle of the sword by just a few inches. She quickly rolled over onto her back to face him, still coming off as more angry than scared.

"Did that bastard Scrivens send you? Are you why Walsh and Lombardi are dead too?" She crawled back from him as he slowly stepped closer.

"I take no credit for Lombardi's murder. That was all Scrivens' doing. But yes, he did send me." He raised the pistol so that it was aimed at her forehead.

"Whatever he paid you, I'll triple it if you let me live and kill him instead." She tried to straighten her robe as she waited for his response, the bottom of it bloodied from the bullet wounds on her legs.

"I can't accept that. I have a contract to honor." He held the pistol aimed at her for a few more seconds before lowering it. She breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that he changed his mind after all.

Instead, he reached for the broadsword, squeezing his gloved hand several times against the handle as he turned it back and forth.

"Good sword. Goodbye, Ms. Adler."

Screaming, she tried to roll back over to crawl from him. In one swing of the sword, meeting her flesh with a wet thud, she was decapitated, blood spurting from the stump of her neck.

Setting the pistol and the sword down next to her body, Shizuka headed back upstairs to leave through the same window he used to enter. Her body would be discovered the next day by her grown daughter who was checking on her mother, concerned since she wouldn't answer her cellphone. She would never be able to forget the sight of her mother's headless body.
