Sometimes going backwards can be the correct path.

He cautiously made his way into the prison, his chains dragging over the objects that littered the prison's concrete floors: old computer monitors, weapons that were rusted and broken, making them useless to him, even building materials that had come free from the prison's structure. It was difficult to see in the hallways, most of the windows boarded up, the little light seeping in through the cracks between the boards providing the only light. He never thought that he'd be trying to get inside of a prison. It was usually the other way around for him.

It was surprising to him that the prison wasn't in worse shape after seeing the giant hole in the prison's walls, not knowing if the hole had been caused by someone or something or if it was simply a collapse caused by the decay of the building itself. And what about that source of light? That had him very curious. Did it mean that someone else was in the prison and had fixed it up somewhat or was it something else entirely? It seemed unlikely that it was a trick of the light, such as sunlight reflecting off of some kind of surface. He was pretty sure that he'd not seen even a ray of sunlight in that world since he'd been there.

Stepping through a puddle that had formed from a broken, leaking pipe, though he couldn't actually see the pipe, only able to hear the slow but constant drip of it, he found himself at a set of double doors that were locked, able to see through the small window on each door that a chain was wrapped around the push bars on the other side of the doors. Setting down his bag of supplies, he tugged at the doors with both hands, leaning his body back to pull even harder, but the doors didn't budge even a centimeter, the chain strong and keeping the doors firmly shut.

"Shit . . . I hate chains," he muttered to himself.

Sighing, he peered into one of the door's windows again, looking for any sign of life, though not surprised at all by the fact that there was none. Perhaps the light had merely been an illusion, a mirage in that barren world. When he got outside, the light probably wouldn't be there at all. But then who chained those double doors shut? Perhaps it had been done before whatever had occurred in that world that led to the abandonment or extinction of its people. He had the feeling that the chain had been put in place sometime after though. And he had the sudden feeling that he wasn't as alone in that world as he'd thought he was for so long now.
