“Well, he always targets the vaults. He drills in, grabs what he can, and leaves before the police show up. That seems to be his MO so far. “ Sheri mused, looking over the map, looking for a bank that would fit the pattern.
“He’s not getting huge hauls, but he’s found a quick, easy target. I don’t think he’ll veer away from what’s worked for him so far. He really has no reason to.” Deadblood said, Sheri nodding in agreement.
“So, if he’s just doing a very high tech version of a smash and grab, why not leave something tempting out for him to snatch?” Deadblood gave her a confused look.
“What? You’re saying we should go deposit marked money in the bank we think he’ll hit next? No guarantee he’d pick out those bills from hundreds of others, Sheri.”
“True,” She replied, still studying the map. “It couldn’t be cash. It would need to be something else, something visible and tempting. Shit... there are two banks right here, that could fit his criteria. Which one would he be more likely to hit next, do you think?”
Deadblood frowned, looking over the two choices.
“They both look about right to me, but Central Savings and Loan is slightly more on the outskirts... he’s drilling through the ground. There has to be a reason he’s following this pattern.”
“I wonder... Could there be something he’s avoiding, or trying to go around. do you think? Why hasn’t he targeted anything more central? Is it just the time it would take to tunnel through, or something else?” Sheri asked, as Deadblood shrugged.
“Possibly. There may be pipes or sewerlines, or something else down there. Wait, holy shit. That might actually be it.”
“What?” Sheri prodded, as he thought it over further.
“Maybe he isn’t trying to avoid something down there as much as he’s trying to utilize it. All those banks line up directly with the main sewer system. That actually makes a lot more sense. He’s only going for banks that are near the sewer system right now. That might change once he’s hit them all, but he still has a few to go, if that’s the case.”
“Then the next one should be be Central Savings and Loans.”
Sheri circled it, giving the map a thoughtful look.
“It’s already closed. We can’t deposit anything tonight. But if we’re right, then there are three more banks that follow his route. I say we see what happens tonight, and if he does hit Central, we be ready for him at Premier Financial.” Deadblood nodded, liking this plan so far. They’d know for certain they were correct if The Driller hit that bank tonight.
“Perfect. That gives me some time to prepare my deposit, then. I have a few ideas, but the important thing is that it be about this big, ” She measured about the size of a brick with her hand. “And hollow. And of course, tempting.”
Deadblood quirked his eyebrow at that. What could she be thinking of depositing that would help them nab The Driller?
She held up her cell phone, smirking.
“It’s got GPS tracking on it. In the event it’s lost or stolen, I can track it via the carrier’s website.”
“That’s... actually brilliant.” Deadblood had to admit, it was a good idea. If he took their decoy deposit hiding her phone, they could track him right to his base of operations and confront him there. Much easier than waiting outside the bank for him to strike and not being able to get inside to the vault fast enough.
She flashed a smile.
“I try. But you were the one who figured out that he was using the sewer system to hit the banks. We’d have no way to know where to deposit it if you hadn’t.”
“Hopefully. I’m not entirely sure, but it seems to fit his pattern. We’ll find out tonight. Maybe you can think of something to make the time pass while we wait?” Deadblood asked suggestively. Sheri smirked again.
“Oh, I can think of a few things, Champ. Maybe you could practice making a deposit...”
